Dear Supporter,
The very serious financial crisis our nation faces has created the best organizing and political climate we’ve seen in decades for cutting the gargantuan military budget. A broad-based and relentless campaign, which Peace Action has played a key role in initiating, is beginning to dismantle U.S. militarism and instead lay the foundation for a more peaceful and just future.
Recognizing this, one of Peace Action’s most steadfast donors has made a generous matching gift pledge, and I need your help to fulfill it!
Please donate before 11:59pm EST on Sunday, December 11 and your gift will be tripled — thanks to a special matching offer!
Your gift will support Peace Action Education Fund’s campaign to Move the Money from the Pentagon to meet the needs of our communities. We will utilize the tools of a reinvigorated democracy: grassroots organizing and local coalition building, public education, petitions, mass demonstrations, and intense pressure on Members of Congress and the President. We are inspired by the global Occupy movement. The United States, which arrogated to itself the title of “The Last Best Hope for Democracy,” can re-learn from them the courage and tenacity that a democracy requires of its citizens.
Today, military spending accounts for more than half of the federal government's discretionary budget. Nuclear weapons spending alone accounts for over $40 billion annually with plans to increase funding for the nuclear weapons complex by over $200 billion over the next decade, including new production plants, warheads, missiles, bombers and submarines – a total upgrade of our nuclear arsenal, more than 20 years after the end of the Cold War!
Along with an annual tab of over $100 billion to fund the war in Afghanistan and another $100 billion to maintain over 900 military bases on foreign soil, the government’s twisted spending priorities will continue to bankrupt America, until we stop it.
And today your special gift will mean three times as much, thanks to one of our most committed Partners who will generously match your gift of any amount. Here's how it works: when you contribute $25 today, our donor will chip in $50 for a total contribution of $75. If you contribute $100, he’ll triple it and Peace Action Education Fund will receive $300!
I can’t thank you enough. Because of your support, Peace Action Education Fund has weathered this recession and is ready to go all out in 2012 and impact the election-year debate on the deficit and our governments twisted spending priorities. This is a moment when all the work you and I have done and all the money we’ve invested in this organization could very well pay off in very real terms.
Humbly for Peace,
Kevin Martin

P.S. Please make your annual gift to Peace Action Education Fund by 11:59pm EST, Sunday, December 11 and have your gift tripled! Working against the backdrop of the next presidential election offers a tremendous opportunity for Moving the Money from runaway military spending to meeting the needs in our communities. Thank you for standing with us!
