Flooding the Headwaters of the Anacostia River Ride this Saturday! Thank you for registering for the Flooding the Headwaters of the Anacostia River Ride, Saturday, October 7th. You have registered for the Sligo Creek portion of the ride, scheduled to leave from Wheaton Regional Park at 9:00am. Participants should gather at the carousel at the 2000 Shorefield Rd. entrance. This tour, in partnership with Earth Conservation Corps, offers a rare opportunity to trace the Anacostia River from its headwaters to the mouth of the Potomac River by combining bicycles and boats. If you haven't donated already, there is a suggested donation of $10(or more!) per rider to defray fuel and staff expenses. Please note that this ride will include small sections of on street riding with traffic. Also, helmets are mandatory. This ride has been altered since its inception. WABA has coordinated with ECC to begin the boat tour at the Bladensbug Marina, at the end of the Anacostia Trail. By doing this, most of the on-road portion of the ride has been eliminated. The new, shortened distances allow for participants to return back along the trails to their respective start areas and cars or Metro station.
The mission of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association is to create a healthy, more livable region by promoting bicycling for fun, fitness and affordable transportation; advocating better bicycling conditions and transportation choices for a healthier environment; and educating children, adults and motorists about safe bicycling. The Earth Conservation Corps is a nonprofit youth development and environmental service organization founded in 1989 in one of our nation's most disadvantaged communities, Southeast Washington, DC. We provide hands-on education, environmental training, professional experience, and leadership skills for disadvantaged young people ages 17-25 (called Corps members), as they work to restore the Anacostia River and surrounding communities. |
