advocacy updates:

DC Bike Registration Update

According to sources within DDOT, the Office of the Inspector General is reviewing all legislation relevant to mandatory bike registration in order to make a final determination on how the law can be repealed. While both DDOT and the Metropolitan Police Department agree that the law needs to be eliminated, DC cyclists will have to wait for the IG’s report before any action can be taken. The report is expected by the end of October. Thanks to those of you that wrote in to MPD to support the repeal of the mandatory registration law. We will be sure to keep you informed.

DC Bike Lane Striping

Thanks to all you vigilant cyclists that wrote in with your reports on DC’s bike lane striping progress. Two new significant stretches of bike lanes have recently been installed: on 14th Street NW from Thomas Circle to T Street NW, an on E Street NW from North Capitol to 13th. In addition, bike lanes have been striped around Thomas Circle (a first for DC) and some surrounding streets. More work is supposed to be done in 2006 and we still need your help. Click here to view the additional streets that are scheduled to receive bike lanes in 2006.

When complete this will add almost 10 miles of bike lanes in 2006 for a grand total of 28 miles throughout the city. Before the striping began in 2001, DC had only 2.7 miles of lanes.
