Bikes Win In Adams Morgan!
Thanks to the support of WABA members and concerned
cyclists, the Planning, Zoning and Transportation Committee for ANC 1C
unanimously voted to support a new transportation plan for 18th
Street in Adams Morgan that goes a long way toward promoting safe bicycling.
You may recall that in earlier drafts of the plan, on-street
facilities for cyclists had been left of the key blocks of 18th Street north of Kalorama. Thanks to the committee vote, the shared lane
markings sought by WABA have now been included from Florida Avenue all the way to Columbia Road. In addition, the committee also supported
traffic calming measures such as raised intersections and pedestrian safety
improvement like curb bulbouts. Ample
bike parking will be provided throughout the corridor and the sidewalks of the
street will be dramatically expanded.
WABA would like to thank all of you that took the time to
write the ANC with your concerns. According
to one commissioner, she had received 150 emails from local cyclists! We couldn't have done it without you.
The new proposal will be put to a vote by the full ANC at
their September meeting. Stay tuned to www.waba.org
for details.
Thanks for your help!
