Dear Washington Area Cycling Supporters:
I am writing to you to share the exciting news that DDOT Director Gabe Klein has signed a Complete Streets Policy ensuring that both bicyclist and pedestrian level-of-service will be considered in every significant roadway project!
This is a huge step forward for the District, and comes as a direct result of WABA's campaign initiated several weeks ago. Thank you to the over 350 DC WABA members and supporters who signed our petition. Your voice was heard, and DDOT now has a policy mandating that the needs of cyclists, pedestrians, and all roadway users be balanced in their projects.
We are grateful for your support, and for the efforts of the many others who have been working for years to encourage Complete Streets, including the Complete Streets Coalition, the League of American Bicyclists, and countless advocates.
This policy demonstrates one way that WABA's efforts to coordinate and magnify the voices of cyclists in the District and region can bring results. If you are not a member, please consider adding to our ability to improve the region by joining now. And if you are already a member, please consider an additional gift to support further advocacy efforts and campaigns throughout the region.
And one more thing....
In the past weeks we have generated numerous emails, calls, and signatures directed to DDOT Director Klein. Now, with this policy, he has demonstrated his responsiveness and his commitment to safety and livability. Let's take a moment to say thank you, and to express to Director Klein, Mayor Fenty, and Council Chairman Vincent Gray our appreciation for Director Klein's efforts, as well as our optimism at the future of safe, livable, complete streets in the District.
